English Learners/Title III
Contact Information
The Mt. Angel School District provides English Language Development programs for all eligible English Language Learners K-12 grades. Each school in our district offers those eligible with at least 30 minutes of uninterrupted instruction around increasing English language proficiency skills. The instruction addresses four domains:
- Reading,
- Writing,
- Speaking and
- Listening
Skills and proficiency levels are annually assessed through our state required English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA21). Scores are reported to families in a language that they use and understand and are submitted to the state as a requirement.
Mt. Angel has formally adopted National Geographic's ELD curriculum , as the main curriculum for instruction. At elementary, it is called Reach. At middle school, it's titled Inside and at high school it is called Edge. St. Mary's also offers ELD instruction taught by highly-qualified ESOL-endorsed classroom teachers. For further information see the ESSA webpage of our Special Services Department.
For families of English learners there is a lot to know, including how their children are:
- Identified as English learners
- Taught English and other subjects
- Tested, tested, and tested some more
- Designated as proficient in academic English and moved out of English learner services
"The Parent Guide for English Learners" gives you basic information about each of these topics. It will help you talk with your child’s school, ask the right questions, and support your child on their journey as an English learner. English and Spanish versions are available.
