* CLOSED * Shea Ritchie Belew Scholarship. DUE May 10, 2022
SHEA RITCHIE BELEW SCHOLARSHIP
Shea Belew Ritchie Scholarship Cover Sheet
To honor the memory of their daughter Shea, Steve Ritchie and Susan Murray have created a college scholarship to be awarded annually to a John F. Kennedy High School senior girl who has participated in cross country for two or more years.
Among the criteria for determining the scholarship award are the following:
- Academic achievement;
- Community service and volunteer activities;
- Financial need for college;
- Athletic achievement and commitment to running and the sport of cross country;
- Plans for college and career.
Deadline for submitting the 2022 application is May 10, 2022.
Shea Ritchie Belew was 33 years old when she passed away in October 2014. Shea attended Silverton High School, the University of Portland and the University of Oregon, where she graduated with a degree in journalism. She was a gifted artist and an accomplished graphic designer, working for nearly a decade at Timeless Media (later Shout Factory) in Eugene, doing cover art for CDs, DVDs, videos, posters and designing a wide variety of other products.
Shea began her running career at Mark Twain Middle School and continued at Silverton High School under Coach Steve Heilman. She qualified for state in 1996 and 1997, was selected Most Outstanding her junior year, and was team captain her senior year. While successful competitively, Shea enjoyed running most for the peace of mind it brought her and the confidence it gave her that she could accomplish many things in life that she set her mind to.
Shea was a loving person, who had a heart for the underdog in life. She volunteered at St. Joseph Shelter and the Benedictine Foundation while still in high school. She took in rescue dogs, and volunteered for the Greenhill Humane Society. She loved to travel with her family, and, later, with her husband, John Belew, and was especially fond of Mexico and Europe.
